What is a good base?

For mobile 27MC and UHF/VHF antennas, a metal ground plane is essential. This surface acts as a foil to the antenna and influences how well your signal propagates. The required length depends on the frequency:

  • 150 MHz (VHF): minimum 107 cm
  • 450 MHz (UHF): approx. 38 cm
  • 800 MHz: only 20 cm

How do you mount an antenna on a car?

Mobile antennas are typically mounted using a fixed antenna mount placed in a hole (opening) in the surface, or a magnetic mount (magnetic mounting). These two methods provide secure and reliable installation.   • In the middle of the roof
    • Ideal: symmetrical ground surface and minimal obstacles.
    • Best choice for maximum performance.
  • In the middle of the trunk lid
    • Good alternative if roof mounting is not possible.
    • Still a fine base surface with a metal trunk lid.
  • Front or rear fender (mudguard)
    • Useful for difficult to reach roofs.
    • Slightly less symmetrical base plane, so performance may decrease.
  • Mounting in grooves of bonnet or trunk lid
    • Practical, but delivers slightly lower signal quality.
  • On the glass (glass mounting)
    • Discreet, without drilling.
    • Less effective due to limited ground area, especially at higher frequencies
  • On the spare wheel holder on the back of an off-road/4x4 vehicle
    • Good alternative without having to drill
    • Good ground plane (with a metal bracket), but delivers slightly lower signal quality.

Antenna brackets and mounting: what do you choose?

Always use professional antenna brackets or an antenna mount that fits your vehicle and antenna. Using an antenna mount ensures a fixed position on your car and is less susceptible to adverse weather conditions.

  • Placement on the side or rear of a vehicle: results in uneven signal due to radiation against the bodywork or other obstacle.
  • Using a roof rack as a ground plane: does not provide sufficient RF coupling.
  • Too short antennas without coil (load): especially with CB, does not function well without additional adjustment.

An 8-foot (244 cm) steel boom performs best, but is impractical. Fiberglass is stiffer than metal and more brittle, while steel is flexible and more durable—ideal for off-road use.

Fiber optic vs. metal antenna: what are the differences?

Fiberglass antennas are lighter, flexible, and can be mounted lower on the vehicle – useful where space or height restrictions are limited. Metal antenna rods, often made of stainless steel or aluminum, are stronger and more durable. They also often offer a wider frequency range, making them ideal for vehicle use in demanding environments. A good quality fiberglass antenna can be used mobile, but for maximum reliability and performance, a metal antenna is generally recommended.

Mobile no-ground antennas: ideal for non-metallic vehicles

No-ground antennas (also called "no ground plane") are specifically designed for vehicles with little or no metal surface, such as RVs, trucks with plastic bodies, or modern vehicles with extensive glass or plastic panels. These antennas feature an internal tuning system, meaning they don't require a large ground plane to function effectively. Although their performance is generally slightly lower than antennas with a full metal ground plane, they are an excellent solution when standard antennas aren't suitable. They're ideal for those who still want mobile coverage without major vehicle modifications.
