All about No Ground 27MHz Antennas
A good antenna is essential for optimal performance of your 27MHz CB radio. With traditional mobile antennas, the metal vehicle plays an important role as a ground plane. But what if your vehicle consists largely of fiberglass, polyester or plastic? In that case, a No Ground (NGP) antenna offers the solution.
What is a No Ground antenna?
A No Ground antenna is specially developed for vehicles and vessels where a traditional metal ground plane is missing. Instead of the metal body, the antenna system uses a specially tuned No Ground coaxial cable that functions as a counterpoise.
This makes it possible to achieve reliable communication via the 27MHz band even on vehicles without a metal roof or body.
What is a ground plane?
A ground plane forms an important part of a traditional mobile antenna installation. In cars, trucks and commercial vehicles, the metal body ensures that the antenna can transmit and receive efficiently.
When this metal surface is missing, problems often arise such as:
- a high SWR value;
- a limited transmission range;
- poorer reception;
- antennas that are difficult to tune.
A No Ground antenna is specially designed to prevent these problems.
When do you choose a No Ground antenna?
A No Ground antenna is ideal for, among other things:
- Campers with a polyester or plastic superstructure.
- Caravans.
- Fiberglass boats.
- Sailing yachts.
- Motorboats.
- Horse trucks.
- Trailers.
- Service vehicles.
- Special vehicles with a composite body.

How does a No Ground antenna work?
With a standard mobile antenna, the metal vehicle forms the counterpoise of the antenna. In a No Ground system, this function is taken over by a specially designed coaxial cable.
This cable is precisely tuned to the antenna and therefore forms an essential part of the complete system.
That is why we always advise:
- Only use the original NGP coaxial cable;
- Never shorten the cable;
- Do not extend the cable;
- Replace the cable only with an identical No Ground model.
Only then will antenna performance remain optimal.
Does a No Ground antenna perform as well as a standard antenna?
When a vehicle has a large metal ground plane, a traditional mobile 27MHz antenna will almost always deliver better performance.
A No Ground antenna is therefore not a replacement for a standard mobile antenna, but a specialized solution for situations where a metal ground plane is missing.
For campers, caravans and fiberglass boats, a No Ground antenna is often the only way to enable reliable communication via the 27MHz band.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about NGP antennas
-
When do I need a No Ground Plane antenna?
If your vehicle or boat does not have a metal surface under or around the antenna, an NGP antenna is the only correct choice to prevent high SWR.
-
Can I use an NGP antenna on a metal vehicle?
No, an NGP antenna is specially designed for use without a ground. On a metal vehicle, a standard CB antenna works better.
-
Can I install an NGP kit myself?
Yes, NGP antennas are often supplied as a complete set with coax, connectors and clear instructions. Choosing a good mounting position is important.
-
What if my signal is weak?
Check that your NGP cable is connected correctly, or consider a longer whip or higher mounting position. A small power amplifier can sometimes also help.
