The Firestik KW4 is a high-performance fiberglass antenna that performs optimally on metal surfaces, such as a steel-bodied vehicle or a metal transmission tower. On non-metallic surfaces—such as plastic RVs or anodized aluminum—the antenna will not perform effectively unless appropriate grounding measures are taken. For stable operation, it is crucial that the antenna is properly tuned to your transmitter's operating frequency. Using an untested or poorly tuned antenna risks damaging your transmitting equipment.
A good solution is the Firestik Stud Mount: a sturdy bracket that provides a reliable connection to a steel surface. Note: powder coating, paint, or anodized layers act as insulation. To ensure proper grounding, you must remove this coating down to the bare metal at the mounting point.
Classic TRIM-TO-TUNE setup since 1975
Firestik's KW series dates back to 1975—even before the advent of adjustable antenna tips. Although this tuning technique was initially considered outdated, the KW series remained incredibly popular. Today, its sales are on par with the more modern FS series—a testament to this model's reliability and performance.
Adjusting the Firestik antenna in just a few steps:
- Remove the top cap from the antenna.
- Using a knife, cut small vertical notches (1 to 1.5 cm) into the top of the fiberglass rod.
- Pull the fiber optic back slightly to expose the wire core.
- Cut a small piece of the wire and push it back into place.
- Replace the top cap.
- Measure the SWR and repeat if necessary until the antenna is properly tuned.
Colors and accessories
The Firestik KW4 is available in four colors: white, red, blue, and black. For customization, separate vinyl tips are available, such as the KWT-R (red) and KWT-W (white), specifically designed for KW series antennas.
