The Firestik KW3 is a powerful fiberglass antenna that performs optimally on a metal surface, such as a vehicle with a steel body or a metal antenna mast. On non-metal surfaces – such as plastic RVs or anodized aluminum – the antenna performs insufficiently, unless measures are taken to create a suitable ground plane. For stable operation, it is crucial that the antenna is correctly tuned to the operating frequency of your transmitter. If you use an untested or poorly tuned antenna, you run the risk of damaging your transmitting equipment.
A good solution is the Firestik Stud mount: a sturdy bracket attachment that ensures a reliable connection to a steel surface. Please note: powder coating, paint, or anodized layers act as insulation. To ensure a good ground connection, you must remove this coating down to the bare metal at the mounting point.
Classic TRIM-TO-TUNE adjustment since 1975
The Firestik KW series dates back to 1975 – even before the advent of adjustable antenna tops. Although this tuning technique was initially considered old-fashioned, the KW series remained incredibly popular. Today, its sales are equivalent to the more modern FS series – a testament to the reliability and performance of this model.
Firestik antenna adjustment in a few steps:
- Remove the top cap from the antenna.
- Using a knife, make small vertical incisions (1 to 1.5 cm) in the top of the fiberglass rod.
- Pull the fiberglass back slightly to expose the wire core.
- Cut a small piece of the wire and push it back into place.
- Replace the top cap.
- Measure the SWR and repeat if necessary until the antenna is properly tuned.
Colors and accessories
The Firestik KW4 is available in four colors: white, red, blue, and black. For personalization, separate vinyl top caps are available, such as the KWT-R (red) and KWT-W (white), specially designed for antennas from the KW series.
