A metal ground plane is required for proper operation
The KW5 only works on metal surfaces that function as a ground plane, such as a steel vehicle or a transmission tower. Not suitable for use on plastic or other non-conductive surfaces. When using with a transmitter, it is essential to tune the antenna correctly to the frequency to prevent damage to your transmit circuit.
Perfect ground plane with a Firestik Stud Mount
Mount the antenna with a Firestik Stud Mount for a solid steel connection. Note: for surfaces with powder coating, paint, or anodization, the coating must be removed down to the bare metal to ensure good conductivity.
Trim-to-Tune tuning: maximum control, minimal effort
The Firestik KW series has been around since 1975 – long before adjustable tips. The Trim-to-Tune method is still valued today for its precision and simplicity. This allows you to tune for low SWR and maximum transmit quality yourself.
Tuning in 6 easy steps:
- Remove the top cap.
- Make vertical slits in the upper part of the stick (approx. 1–1.5 cm).
- Slightly open the fiberglass to expose the wire core.
- Cut off a small piece of the wire.
- Push the wire back in, replace the top cap.
- Measure the SWR and repeat if necessary until it is optimal.
