K-PO DX-5000 VFO 10M and 12M transceiver

The K-PO DX-5000 VFO is the latest version in the well-known DX-5000 series and is based on the PLUS V8.0 platform. The major difference is already evident in the name: this version features a genuine VFO mode. This means you are not limited to pre-programmed channels, but can directly set a desired frequency.

What is VFO and what are its benefits?

VFO stands for Variable Frequency Oscillator. Simply put, the VFO gives you the ability to move directly through frequencies instead of jumping exclusively from one pre-programmed channel to another.

In a traditional channel mode, for example, you select channel 1, 2 or 3, where each channel is pre-linked to a specific frequency. With the VFO on this K-PO, you can set the frequency much more directly.

The available frequency steps are 10 Hz, 100 Hz, 1 kHz, 5 kHz and 10 kHz. This gives you significantly more control when you want to tune precisely to a specific frequency.

The familiar DX-5000, but with more features

The enclosure is shorter and equipped with additional ventilation openings on the top and bottom. The dimmable display allows you to better adjust the lighting to the conditions.

The audio side also offers extensive options. The radio features RX Noise Reduction and NRC, where the NRC filter provides both RX and TX noise reduction and is adjustable in five levels. This can be particularly helpful in SSB to reduce interfering noise.

Furthermore, a noise gate, RX compander, Noise Blanker/ANL, RF Gain, Mic Gain and automatic and manual squelch are also available.

AM, FM, SSB and CW

The K-PO DX-5000 VFO supports AM, FM, SSB and CW. The specified maximum transmit power is 12 watts on AM/CW and a maximum of 40 watts on FM and SSB.

This gives you one radio with various modulation options. Features such as Dual Watch, scan, TOT, Clarifier, +10 kHz, CTCSS and DCS codes, and memory channels are also available.

The included dynamic microphone also features UP/DOWN frequency control and AQ control.

Programming the DX5000 via computer

Would you like to tailor the radio further to your use? The K-PO DX-5000 VFO can be programmed via software. The programming cable connection is located on the rear of the radio. The required programming cable is available optionally.

Via the software, frequency range limits, frequency channels, Mic Gain limits, CW sideband frequency and volume, and various other settings can be programmed. The software also features a factory reset function.

Modification and use on 11M

The default specified frequency for this version is 28,000 to 29,700 MHz. According to the product specifications, for the export version, a range of 24,715 to 30,105 MHz is possible after modification/programming.

This means the radio can technically also cover frequencies within the 11M band. However, the capabilities of the radio and the legal permission to transmit on a specific frequency, modulation type, or with a certain power are two different matters. Therefore, always check which rules apply to your application.

For users who are specifically interested in modification or programming, it is also important to determine beforehand which configuration is desired.

Extensive connection and adjustment options

On the rear, you will find connections for an external speaker, external S-meter and PA, among others. A SO-239 UHF connector is used for the antenna. The microphone connection is 4-pin.

The radio also features SWR protection and supply voltage protection. The supply voltage is 13.8 volts.
