Looking for a compact AIS antenna specifically developed for use with an AIS transceiver? The Shakespeare 5215-AIS Squatty Body® is a 90 cm (35 inch) marine antenna with 3 dB gain. This Shakespeare antenna is specifically designed for the AIS marine band and combines a compact size with a sturdy stainless steel construction.
Thanks to its low-profile design, the 5215-AIS is particularly suitable for mounting on a mast or other suitable vertical position on board. The included stainless steel L-bracket allows for secure mounting.
Specifically designed for AIS transceivers
The Shakespeare 5215-AIS is specifically tuned for use with AIS transceivers. AIS stands for Automatic Identification System and is used for the automatic exchange of information between vessels and other AIS stations.
An antenna suitable for the frequencies used is an important part of the installation. The 5215-AIS has a bandwidth of 7 MHz within a VSWR of 2.0:1 and a nominal SWR of 1.5:1 at 162 MHz.
The antenna has an impedance of 50 Ohm and can handle a maximum input power of 50 watts.
Compact Shakespeare antenna made of stainless steel
With a length of approximately 91 cm (36 inches), this Shakespeare AIS antenna takes up relatively little space. The Squatty Body® construction consists of a stainless steel housing with a 91 cm (36 inch) antenna whip.
Inside the antenna is a sealed, tinned copper wire coil. This construction is developed for use in a marine environment and combines a sturdy design with a low weight.
The antenna is vertically polarized and has a gain of 3 dB.
Mounting with included stainless steel L-bracket
For a good AIS installation, the placement of the antenna also plays an important role. The Shakespeare 5215-AIS is designed for vertical mounting and can be attached with the included stainless steel L-bracket.
This makes the antenna suitable for mast mounting, among other things. A higher mounting position can be beneficial for the range of VHF-based communication, depending on the installation and conditions on board.
For connecting the coaxial cable, the antenna has an SO-239 connector. Before mounting, check whether the coaxial cable and connector used are suitable for this connection and an impedance of 50 Ohm.
