No power from the wall outlet? With the Tecsun GR-88P hand crank emergency radio , you can still continue listening to radio broadcasts. This portable emergency radio features FM, MW (AM) and two shortwave bands (SW) and can be powered in several ways. Use the built-in rechargeable Ni-MH battery, 3 AA batteries or charge the internal battery manually with the hand crank.
This makes the Tecsun GR-88P a practical radio for an emergency kit, but also for camping, traveling and other situations where a wall outlet is not readily available. A built-in emergency flashlight also provides light when you need it.
What is a hand crank emergency radio?
A hand crank radio is a radio with a built-in dynamo that you power yourself with a crank. With the Tecsun GR-88P, you unfold the handle and turn it firmly. The dynamo converts this motion into electrical energy, which charges the built-in 3.6V Ni-MH battery.
Approximately 60 seconds of firm cranking, at about two revolutions per second, provides on average enough energy for about 15 minutes of radio listening at low volume. The built-in lamp must be switched off. The actual operating time depends on factors including the cranking speed and the set volume.
You are therefore not completely dependent on the electrical grid to use the radio. This makes the GR-88P interesting as an emergency radio for, for example, a power outage or emergency kit.
Four radio bands: FM, MW and shortwave
The Tecsun GR-88P receives more than just regular FM radio. You can manually tune into four bands: FM, MW (AM), SW1 and SW2. The two shortwave bands in particular make this portable radio interesting for listeners who also want to be able to receive shortwave broadcasts.
The frequency range is:
- FM: 87–108 MHz
- MW (AM): 520–1710 kHz
- SW1 (shortwave): 3.2–7.6 MHz
- SW2 (shortwave): 9.0–22.0 MHz
- Tuning: manual tuning with a separate fine-tuning knob
For FM and shortwave, the radio features an extendable telescopic antenna. An internal ferrite antenna is used for MW/AM. With the separate fine tuning, you can tune more precisely to a station after the initial tuning.
Three ways to power the Tecsun GR-88P
An important advantage of this Tecsun emergency radio is the flexible power supply. The built-in Ni-MH battery can be charged with the dynamo, but also via an external 5V USB power source with the included charging cable.
In addition, you can use the radio with 3 AA batteries. This is convenient when you are away for longer periods or keep the radio as part of your emergency supplies.
Please note: although power banks are often sought for emergency radios, the Tecsun GR-88P is not described in the manual as a power bank for charging a smartphone or other external device. The 5V connection is intended for powering and charging the radio itself.
Built-in lamp for emergency situations
On the top is a built-in white LED lamp. This means that in addition to a radio, you also have a simple light source at hand. This can be practical during a power outage, in a tent, on the go or when you need to find your belongings in the dark.
The combination of a radio, manual dynamo and emergency flashlight makes the GR-88P particularly suitable as a compact portable emergency radio.
For home, on the go and outdoors
Of course, the Tecsun GR-88P does not have to stay in the cupboard until the power goes out. The radio is also suitable for camping, traveling and other outdoor activities. Thanks to the carrying handle, you can easily take it with you, and with AA batteries you have an extra option to use the radio on the go.
With dimensions of approximately 169 x 147 x 55 mm, the radio remains relatively compact. It also features a built-in speaker and a 3.5 mm jack for earphones or headphones with an impedance of 8–32 ohms.
Main technical specifications
The Tecsun GR-88P has a rated output power of more than 300 mW. The built-in rechargeable battery is a 3.6V Ni-MH battery pack. Alternatively, the radio runs on three AA batteries (4.5V). For external charging, the GR-88P has a charging voltage and current of 5V/500 mA.
The radio is designed as a practical dynamo-crank emergency radio: no unnecessary complexity, but several reception bands, multiple power options, manual tuning and a built-in lamp in one portable device.
Do you want a Tecsun emergency radio that you can also power without a wall outlet? Then choose the Tecsun GR-88P and add a versatile hand crank emergency radio to your emergency kit, camping gear or travel luggage.
