Why choose a Michelin mascot?

  • Unmistakable character: the white, band-shaped look and friendly smile make this a real eye-catcher.
  • Historical value: the face of quality in the automotive industry since 1898.
  • Personal touch: give your vehicle a cool and stylish accent.
  • Conversation starter: fellow truckers and enthusiasts will recognize it immediately.
  • Durable & robust: made to last, even with intensive use.

The history of the Michelin man

The Michelin Man – officially Bibendum – was created in 1898 by French cartoonist O'Galop at the request of founders André and Edouard Michelin. The inspiration? A stack of tires resembling a little man. In the first advertisement, Bibendum held up a glass full of nails with the caption: "Le pneu Michelin boit l'obstacle," or: "The Michelin tire drinks the obstacle." This symbolized the unparalleled quality of Michelin tires. It was not without reason that the Financial Times named him the best logo of the twentieth century in 2000.

Today, Bibendum is a beloved mascot among drivers, collectors, and enthusiasts. And with your own one on your truck, you show that you choose class and character.

A Michelin doll, also known as the Bibendum or Michelin Man, is the mascot of the French tire manufacturer Michelin. The figure is made of car tires and is often depicted in various poses, with a smile and a friendly expression.

The origin of the Michelin man / Michelin figure
The Michelin Man was conceived in 1889 by the French Michelin brothers André and Edouard, the founders of Michelin tires. The idea originated at the 1894 World's Fair in Lyon. André saw a stack of tires at their booth. Edouard remarked, "Look, with arms and legs on it, it looks like a little man." Four years later, in 1898, the Michelin Man was finally put to paper as an advertising image by cartoonist O'Galop.

Bibendum
O'Galop based his advertising image on a poster he had previously designed for a German brewery. It showed a king raising his glass, uttering the Latin words "Nunc est bibendum," meaning "Now is the time to drink."

O'Galop replaced the king with the Michelin Man. The Michelin Man held a glass with nails, toasting with it. O'Galop added the text, "Le pneu Michelin boit l'obstacle" (The Michelin tire drinks the obstacle). Michelin's message was that their tires were of excellent quality. Even nails and other sharp objects couldn't puncture the tire. This poster led to the Michelin Man being called "Bibendum."

Best logo of the century
In 2000, the Financial Times named the Michelin Man the best logo of the twentieth century. To this day, you still see it everywhere on tires, trucks, and maps.

Museum
Michelin has its own museum, "L'Aventure Michelin." Here you can discover Michelin's history, displayed across more than 2,000 m².
