Smart switching with antenna switches, duplexers and triplexers

Slim schakelen met antenne switches, duplexers en triplexers

Whether you're an experienced ham radio operator or just starting out in radio communications, a good antenna switch, duplexer, triplexer, or 4-way coaxial switch is essential for an efficient setup. In this blog post, we explain what these devices do, what to look for when purchasing them, and how to optimally use them in your installation.

What is an antenna switch?

An antenna switch – also called a coaxial switch – allows you to connect multiple antennas without having to manually swap cables. You can select which antenna is active with a single click. This prevents wear and tear, saves time, and creates a tidy workspace.

Do you have one transceiver but multiple antennas? Then an antenna switch is the ideal solution.

The main types of antenna switches

1. Manual antenna switches

The most commonly used option. You manually switch between two, three, or four antennas with a sturdy rotary knob. Ideal for basic setups and hobby use.

  • Suitable for HF (1.8–30 MHz), some models also support VHF/UHF.
  • Simple, reliable and affordable.

2. Remote switches

You can place these at the top of a mast, for example, and operate them from your hobby room. A big advantage: you only need to run one coaxial cable down.

  • Perfect for hard-to-reach antenna installations.
  • Ideal for fixed installations or remote stations.

3. Automatic switches

These switch automatically based on the frequency being used. They communicate with a band switching controller on your transceiver.

  • Perfect for automated systems
  • Less manual work, more efficiency.

Duplexers and triplexers: multiple bands via one antenna

A duplexer allows two different frequency bands to be used via a single antenna or coaxial cable. A triplexer does the same for three bands.

Useful for:

  • Using UHF, VHF and HF, VHF and HF or UHF and HF antennas on one transceiver
  • Multiple antennas on one coax
  • Compact, mobile or specific installations

Note: A duplexer/triplexer contains filters to prevent interference between bands. Check their operation regularly.

4-way coax switches: maximum flexibility

A 4-way coax switch lets you switch between four antennas or four transceivers. This makes it ideal for testing, troubleshooting, and highly variable setups.

Applications:

  • Radio amateurs testing multiple antenna types (e.g. dipole, vertical, long wire)
  • Remote switching via +12V control
  • Signal optimization for 4G/LTE routers with external antennas
  • Quick switching in case of malfunctions or maintenance
  • Points to consider when purchasing

Don't just choose the cheapest switch, but pay attention to these points:

  1. Number of ports: Do you have enough connections now and in the future?
  2. Frequency range: Does the switch suit your use (HF, VHF, UHF)?
  3. Connectors: PL (SO-239), N-type or BNC?
  4. Operation: Manual, remote or automatic?
  5. Quality: Avoid cheap, poorly built models – they are likely to cause losses or malfunctions.

Benefits of an antenna switch

  • Quickly switch between antennas for optimal signal strength
  • Fewer cables and less chance of errors
  • More flexible station that is easily expandable
  • Saving space and connector wear

Maintenance & usage tips

  • Keep connectors clean and dry
  • Lubricate the knobs of manual switches if necessary
  • Check the duplexer/triplexer filters periodically
  • Always use good quality connectors (avoid cheap adapters)
