Are you a plane spotter, train enthusiast, or do you enjoy listening to communications on the PMR, aviation, or 27MHz bands? Then you know how important good reception is. The standard antenna on your handheld scanner is often fine for close-up use, but misses out on weaker or more distant signals. Time to give your scanner a boost with a suitable antenna!
What does a scanner antenna do?
A good scanner antenna ensures better and clearer reception of radio signals. Especially if you want to receive specific bands such as aviation, UHF, VHF, or 27 MHz, replacing the standard antenna is a smart choice. You can choose from two types:
- Fixed antenna fixed length, available in different lengths, robust and ideal for on the go.
- Telescopic antenna : extendable and perfectly adjustable to the desired frequency(ies).
Monoband, Dualband, Tripleband, or Quadband – What do these terms mean?
- Monoband antenna : For one frequency band. For example, only for UHF.
- Dual Band antenna: For two bands, usually UHF and VHF (144 MHz and 430 MHz).
- Triple band antenna: For three bands, such as UHF, VHF and airband.
- Quadband antenna : For four bands, for example UHF, VHF, airband and 27 MHz.
Commonly used frequencies
A selection of popular frequencies you can listen to:
- Aviation band: 108 – 137 MHz (including emergency frequency 121.500 MHz and intercommunication on 123.450 MHz)
- PMR and events: 446 MHz
- Train traffic: including 429.8875 MHz (NS communication)
- Marine communications: between 156 - 174 MHz
- Dutch MIL: 132.500 MHz (low-flying traffic Zeeland) and 128.500 MHz (Brabant/North Sea)
- 27 MC: 27MHz CB band: Popular among truckers and hobbyists
- Mobile networks and 5G: 800 MHz to 3.5 GHz
- FM radio: frequencies around 100 MHz
What can you receive with a scanner?
With a scanner, depending on the frequency range of the scanner and the antenna, you can listen to communications on frequencies of, among others, security companies, events, church radio listening, maritime radio communication, water traffic, air traffic, coast guard, KNMR, water police, ferry services, Red Cross, rescue brigades, aviation police, motor sports, cycling, construction cranes, Taxi companies, railways, construction site workers, radio amateurs, illegal transmitting equipment, various broadcasters, AM/FM, and much more!
With a broadband or multiband scanner antenna you can listen in on a lot of communications!
Which antenna connection does your scanner have?
Looking to buy a handheld scanner antenna? Check your scanner's antenna connection. If it has a BNC-Female connector, you'll need an antenna with a BNC-Male connector. If your scanner has an SMA-Female connector, you'll need an antenna with an SMA-Male connector.

Scanner with a BNC-Female connector. The most common types are Uniden, AOR, and Whistler.

Scanner with an SMA-Female connection as most common on ICom and Yaesu transceivers.

Handheld transceiver with SMA-Male connection as most common with Baofeng, Quansheng and also with some Yaesu models.
At Deltron you will always find an antenna that fits — from compact models to extendable versions for optimal reception.
